21st January 2015

We are on board.

Well the journey is now under way.

We left Liverpool yesterday just before 3.30 and had a relatively uneventful journey to Oxford, where we spent the night in a very pleasant country pub.

The next morning we were up early, leaving the hotel just after 7 for the 15 minute journey to Simon and Emily's. An hour and a half later we arrived, having been stuck in extremely heavy traffic.

We had to be in Portsmouth for the ferry to Spain by 12, so we only had time to have a quick breakfast before setting out again. Jeff drove the Espace for the first time from Oxford to the ferry.

We had booked the car onto the ferry about 6 months ago, before we had decided to buy the roof box. Little did we realise the trouble that this would cause. The box increased the height of the car by enough for it not to fit into its allocated space. Space in the section with higher roof clearance was full, so If we wanted to take the box on the ship we would have to wait for the next ferry - on Saturday.

It was a case of climbing onto the roof, unbolting the box and stuffing it inside the car. All the luggage that was already in the car was piled on top of Della and Diane. I didn't hear any complaints from them, but they were buried in suitcases for the hour an three quarters we had to wait to board the ferry and all sound was muffled. It was very peaceful.

Anyway, we made it safely onto the ship and we have already met one of the other competitors. Della and Diane have recovered from their ordeal.
